Wrapper from the Drawings of the Hepaticae of the Expedition. -- 26 plates of the mosses of the Expedition.

W.S. Sullivant note dated Jan. 1865: "Six or seven of thse species were published in Hookers Journal of Botany (London) for 1850 p. 317. -- After having worked up a portion of the Hepaticeae of the Expedition I found that with the preparation of the mosses paper and many business engagements I could not find time for the Hepaticae. They were sent to Gottsche some three years since to report upon. Have not since heard from him."

Note on wrapper: "These drawings were all copied and redrawn by A. Schrader and sent to Capt. Wilkes in the fall of 1857 to be engraved - making in all 26 folio plates. W.S. Sullivant."

Details are described by Geneva Sayrve in her article, "Illustrations of the lost Hepatics of the Wilkes Expedition" (The Bryologist 78: 204-205. 1975).
