Harvard related

These records document book borrowing from the Harvard College Library from 1762 to 1897. Book borrowers include Harvard faculty and students, tutors, overseers, proctors, administrators, employees, and prominent clergy, jurists, lawyers, doctors, and educators with connections to Harvard University. The transactions recorded are book loans (that is, library circulation or borrowing). Records are handwritten and were chiefly maintained in ledgers. The record of a transaction consists of name of borrower, book title, date of loan (charge), and date of return (discharge). Records are arranged chronologically by academic year and organized within each year by category of borrower. Undergraduates are further grouped by class year.

These records may be of value to researchers interested in the reading habits or intellectual pursuits of individuals who borrowed books from the Harvard College Library.

The Records of the Harvard University Library : Library charging records, are open for research.
