American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions
Dakota Mission, 1844–1859
ABC 18.3.7, v.3.
Houghton Library
Report on the recommendations of the Committee that we have an annual meeting at the same time with that of the Board.

We are social beings. God has so constituted us that intercourse with each other increases our moral power for good or ill. The habits of this heathen people illustrate the latter; and the combined influence and action of the Church of Christ, the former. We feel that our work among this heathen people is so arduous as to require all the help we can derive from frequent intercourse with each other.
Selections from Houghton Library's collections of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, which display deep-seated cultural biases, offer a unique view of their efforts to teach reading to Native Americans.
